Group Discussion 6: Alternative Residency Models

moderator: Chus Martinez, MACBA

This group session will shed light on unconventional residency models and experiences that break out from the traditional artists' exchange. Curatorial residencies are particularly rising as an alternative model given the need for a continuous flow of expertise and training in curatorial practices both in Europe and the Middle East and Africa.  In addition, some organizations are seeking writing and architecture residents to participate in specialized projects.  Curators, writers, and architects bring a completely different language to the discipline.  The formulation of resident cooperation across disciplinary lines could have the potential for a wider array of projects and creative networks that are the desired result of any residency program.

Statements for Discussion

  1. OpsommingstekenCuratorial residencies can strengthen the local arts scene by facilitating training and education of local emerging curators and cultural workers.

  2. OpsommingstekenDo resident curators need the same infrastructural support as resident artists or do they have a completely different set of needs?

  3. OpsommingstekenWhat do alternative residency models bring to a host institution and its constituency? Does the greater complexity add to the discourse? How so?

  4. OpsommingstekenWhat is the motivation behind alternative residency models?  Writing or curatorial residencies are an interesting case in point. How could they be used by the host institution?
